We all make choices everyday. They are a part of our lives that most of don’t give much thought. We choose to get up in the morning, go through our normal routine and head out the door. You may say, “But those are things we have to do.” Not necessarily. We don’t HAVE to do these things, we’ve just been trained that we should. They really are choices, though perhaps, unconscious ones.
How many of us make unconscious choices on a daily basis that have a negative affect on our lives? Did you ever stop to think that our thoughts are by choice? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the comment “I can’t help what I think!”. You may not be able to control all the thoughts that come into your mind…but you do have the choice of what stays there!
What thoughts do you dwell on? What do you allow to go over and over in your mind? Rumination is what happens when you process a thought over and over again. The definition of ruminate according to Merriam-Webster is:
To go over in the mind repeatedly and often casually or slowly
To chew repeatedly for an extended period
To chew again what has been chewed slightly and swallowed : chew the cud
To engage in contemplation, reflect
I’m a visual person so when I think of ruminate I think of a cow chewing some grass, regurgitating it and chewing it again. Pretty nasty, eh? Well, that’s what it’s like to allow negative thoughts to continue going over and over in your mind. You are vomiting in your mind!! YUK! I know…a little dramatic but it gets my point across!
We can control our thoughts? In the Bible it says to take each thought captive..but how? There are many things you can do. Here are a few suggestions.
Stop! You are in control of your mind! Own that! You are boss! You can say stay or go to any thought that comes to your mind. So take charge and tell the negative thoughts to go! It really is that simple… if you do it!
Ask yourself “What’s the worst that could happen?” Dale Carnegie, once said, “First ask yourself: What is the worst that can happen? Then prepare to accept it. Then proceed to improve on the worst.”
Change direction. When a negative thought comes in, think of something good, positive or peaceful. Visualize it in your mind. Put yourself in the midst of it and you will find a calmness settling over you and maybe even a smile coming to your face!
Do something! Anything that will take your mind off of whatever it is that’s bothering you. Get busy! So many times we allow those negative thoughts to remain and before we know it we are spending more time lying around doing nothing because we’ve become so depressed. DON’T ALLOW THIS!!!! Get up, get out and get busy! It really does work!
Write it out. When we write what’s bothering us it loses power that we thought it had. In other words, it’s not that big a deal. When we “see” it on paper we realize we were blowing things out of proportion to reality and we can let it go.
These are only a few things that we can do to take control over our thoughts. I know, it sounds very simplistic but it really is that simple. You must remember that in order for any of these things to work you have to APPLY them. We have a choice of the thoughts that stay or go in our minds and with that choice comes POWER! It’s up to us if the power will lead us to victory or defeat. We choose, it’s up to us. Choose positive thoughts and be VICTORIOUS!
