Take Action

Spread the love

We’ve all heard it…you know, the saying “Just Do It!”  But what does that look like?  What are we supposed to do?  And why should we do anything?  Well, the answers to these questions  are different for each individual.  It depends on the circumstances and goals for that person.  The point is to take action.  Do SOMETHING!!  But why?

We were never meant to be stagnant, still or non-productive.  When you think of stagnant water, what do you envision?  Pretty nasty, huh?  And what about a super hot day (like today in Mid-Tennessee!!).  When it’s super hot and the air is still, it’s not pleasant is it?  And non-productive pretty much explains itself.  The picture I’m trying to paint is this.  When you take action, you move forward and are productive.

So why is it so hard?  There are many reasons why we don’t take action:

  1.  FEAR – This is probably the number one reason why people don’t take action.  Fear of failure, fear of how it will appear to others, and some may even say fear of success!  For with success comes responsibility!
  2.   LACK OF KNOWLEDGE – You just don’t know what to do or how to do it.
  3.   PROCRASTINATION – Another biggie.
  4. LAZINESS – No one wants to talk about it…but sometimes it is so true.
  5. POOR TIME MANAGEMENT – Alas, the “I just don’t have the time” syndrome.

And these are just a few.  So what can you do to overcome these obstacles that stand between us and action?  Between us and our dreams, our goals?  One of the things that helped me (and took care of two of the above at the same time) is to realize that fear is just the lack of knowledge.  you gain knowledge, you overcome fear.  Is it that easy?  YES!!  You see, the not knowing gives fear its power.  Once you can answer the questions who, what, when, where, or how you take the power away and can move forward.  The more knowledge you gain, the less you have to be afraid of.

Procrastination and time management also go hand in hand and is probably my biggest obstacle.  I get distracted very easily and if I’m not careful, I’m off track and headed in the opposite direction of where I wanted to go…BUT…the key to getting a grasp on both of these is PLANNING.  Benjamin Franklin is credited for having said “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.  So make a plan.  Set goals, short-term and long-term.  Do you go on a trip without a map (or GPS these days!)?  How would you ever get to where you wanted to go, if you didn’t have some idea of how to get there?  So make a plan AND USE IT!!!  There’s no sense in making a plan if you never look at it!  (Yes, I’m preaching to the choir right now….guilty!)

Laziness is just that….lazy.  It says in the Bible  “How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?   A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”  Proverbs 6:9-11 AND “For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”  2 Thessalonians 3:10.  There are many more….but you get the drift.  Laziness gets you nowhere and nothing.  Period.

A word of caution here.  There is a difference in taking action and just busy work.  Be focused like a laser not scattered and directionless.  Busyness is not what we want so know the difference.  And also, it’s okay to rest.  It’s necessary for rejuvenation and restoration of the soul and even though it may seem counter productive, it actually helps you be more productive.

So take action!  Move forward reaching for the stars, for your hopes and dreams.   Create your road map move towards the future you want!  Let’s get started!

Blessings to all of you,
