Oh, to be able to be thankful for the little things!! Today we’re going to talk about how to learn to be thankful for the little things in life.
Something happened to me the other day that got me so excited I started dancing! Well, as much as I could dance after having had gall bladder surgery! LOL! What was it you ask that got me so excited? I received this…
MY FIRST SEED CATALOG OF THE YEAR ARRIVED!!!!!
You may think I’ve gone off the proverbial deep end for getting so excited over something that seems so trivial but you have to understand. It’s been a tough winter. We live in southern Middle Tennessee and we’ve had 4 measurable snowfalls already this year….4!!!! We haven’t had that much snow in the last 4 years combined! And it’s been cold! Like REALLY cold for this area!
Now if you live up in a colder climate that gets snow all the time please don’t judge me! Remember, I’m a Florida girl by birth, remember? So If you would just cut me a little slack, I’d greatly appreciate it! And I thank you in advance for it…LOL!
So, getting back to my wonderful little seed catalog. Why would I get so excited? What about it made me jump for joy and do my little happy dance? Because it brought me hope because I’ve learned how to be thankful for the little things in life.
I LOVE to garden! There’s just something about planting something in the ground and watching it grow that makes me smile. I am passionate about growing things!
Since we moved to our new house back in October, I have a blank canvas to work with and I’m so excited to get started!
On our new property we have very few trees so there’s literally almost a whole acre for me to embellish with beautiful flowers and stuff! I can’t wait!
Learning To be Thankful For The Little Things
Now, you may still be asking yourself why I got that excited about the catalog. I mean, it’s just a catalog, right? It’s not like I actually got the plants or anything! So why was I so excited?
Because the little things matter…and they can bring joy…if you let them.
For any of you who either know me well or have read this blog for any length of time, you know I’m a passionate person. I get excited easily and can find joy in the smallest of things. Even during the darkest of times.
There’s a scripture that I memorized a long time ago that’s helped me to appreciate the little things and be able to find joy in just about any circumstance.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT) reads like this;
Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus..
I’ve taken that to heart and done my best to live that scripture out.
What It DOESN’T Say
Read it carefully and I want you to take note of what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t say to be thankful for all things but in all things. What does that mean? How is for different from in you may ask? That’s a great question?
It’s all about perspective. You see, as we go through our lives we have a choice to make about what we focus on. I could have easily been so focused on the fact that it was frigid outside and I didn’t even want to go for a walk because it was like 30 something degrees and the wind was blowing which made it feel even colder. But instead, this little catalog helped me to think about Spring!
I was able to imagine myself being outside with the sunshine on my shoulders and it made me happy! Anyone hear John Denver singing? See how my perspective changed?
What If Things Are Really Bad
You may be saying, “Listen, Chica. You don’t know what I’m going through. My life sucks hairballs right now”! If that’s the case…I am so sorry. In no way am I trying to minimize any difficulty or heartbreak you may be going through. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one or a life threatening diagnosis, please know, I understand. I’ve experienced both and sometimes it’s hard to see anything good when you are navigating all the bad stuff that this world can throw at us but I promise that if you look, you can find something!
When I was going through my cancer treatment last year, it was hard! But people were still surprised by my attitude. Here I was getting the strongest chemotherapy treatment there was and I was cracking jokes with the nurses! I mean, I had lost ALL my hair, had zero energy for the most part, and felt nausious most of the time.
How could I keep such a good attitude? I focused on what I could that was good.
For instance, I never threw up! Not one time while I was going through chemo or radiation did I ever vomit. For me…that’s a win! I hate to get sick so I was thankful!
I didn’t have to buy shampoo or color my hair! That for me was a win!
I was able to work from home so I didn’t have to drive that hour in to work every day….that was a win as well!
If you focus on what’s good…even if it’s just one thing, you won’t think about the other. Your mind can’t have two thoughts at the same time!
It’s All In Your Focus
Let me tell you a funny story.
I love nature, I love being outside, the sound of birds or just the breeze rustling the leaves. I especially love sunrises and sunsets. I’m an artist and I love color. We used to live in live in El Paso, TX and would drive up into New Mexico quite often. One time we went to Santa Fe for a week and almost made my husband have a wreck when I saw the sun setting over the butte! It was AMAZING!
I got so excited I shouted “Stop the car, stop the car!” My husband quickly pulled over and said “What is it? What’s wrong?!!” I just looked out the window and with awe in my voice said “Look at that sunset. Isn’t it beautiful? I’ve got to get a picture!!”
He looked at me as if I’d lost my mind and shook his head. Then he said “Don’t EVER do that to me again! You almost made me have a wreck”! Fortunately he’s used to my passionate reactions to beauty and loves me anyway! LOL!
Here’s the thing…out of that picture I took I was able to create a painting that captured that scene so I can remember it for the rest of my life!
Where Is Your Focus?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, what we focus on is what grows in our life. We all have times in our life when everything gets turned upside down, we all suffer with losses, getting hurt by others or hard times but we don’t have to focus on all the bad stuff! Learn to be thankful for the little things!
We can all find at least one thing we can be thankful for, just like my little seed catalog. For you, it may just being thankful that you woke up this morning or maybe your pain isn’t quite as bad today. Give thanks! Praise the Lord! And, focus on that one thing, whatever it is with thanksgiving and I promise you…if you make this a daily habit, you will find you will have far more peace and joy than you would ever realize. Learn to be thankful for the little things and see what happens!
