Do You REALLY Know Jesus?

That may seem like a strange question for some.  You may say of course I do!  He’s God’s son, he lived over 2000 years ago, he died on the cross and rose again 3 days later.  All that’s true….but it’s not what I asked.  Those are just historical facts that even the devil knows about him.  What I want to know is do you REALLY KNOW him.  In other words….are you REALLY saved.

This is a different type of post for me on this website but one I couldn’t NOT write. I know it’s wordy and long but I beg you to read through the whole thing.

During these dark days of the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic, my heart weighs heavy for those who don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior.  Even more so for those who think they do but really don’t.  Now before you go and get all defensive, remember, even Jesus said there would be those who thought they knew Him but really didn’t.  Those that would be turned away on Judgement day.  In Matthew 25:31-46 it tells the sad story, and it breaks my heart.  Some may ask why a loving God would do that.  Well, let me ask you a question.  If you have a child, and you’ve asked them repeatedly not do something but they don‘t listen and keep doing it anyway.  Won’t you punish them?  Of course you will!  That’s what a loving parent does to teach their child right from wrong. There are always consequences for our actions and it’s the same with God.  The only difference is the consequences with God are eternal!  He IS a loving God but He’s also a just God, therefore if we don’t obey, there will be consequences.

So, how then?  How do you know for sure you know Jesus and are saved?  Look at your heart.  Is it Christ-centered.  Do you want to please God more than yourself?  Do you love others as Christ loved?  When others look at you, who do they see, you or Christ in you.  Does your walk mimic your talk?   In other words, there will be evidence that you are saved by your words, actions and attitudes and that you put God first in everything.   Now there may be times when we have doubt.  That’s normal but for those who really know Christ you realize your humanness and you trust Him to continue the work He started in you and you persevere.

Many folks think to be saved you have to be perfect and never sin.  That’s ridiculous!  As human’s we WILL sin, that’s a given.  Paul says it this way in Romans 3:23 “ALL fall short of the glory of God.”   It’s how we handle the sin that will show if we are saved.  This is what gets people off track.  The world today will tell you “You can’t ever be perfect so why try!”  Thankfully, God doesn’t stay focused on what we do, but he looks at our hearts.  Do we want to be holy?  Do we want to please God?  Do we repent when we sin?  Does it even bother us when we sin?  Because if it doesn’t, you need to ask yourself if you REALLY accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior or did you just walk down the aisle and say a few words?    There MUST be change when we accept Christ.  God loves us…period.   But He loves us enough to not leave us the way we are.  He expects us to be willing to make changes to be more like Christ as we grow in our walk with Him.

There are three things that are proof of salvation.   Belief, Repentance, and Obedience.

You have to believe you are a sinner that needs to be saved and that Jesus is the only way to receive that salvation.  You have to repent of your sins, turn from them, and choose to obey what God says we are to do and how we are to behave in his Word….the Bible.

You have to believe that Jesus came to this earth, died for your sins and now sits in heaven with God.    John 14:6 says “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the father except through me.”  That is pretty straight forward.  You HAVE to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior in order to be saved. Romans 10:9 says “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

You HAVE to believe the Word of God.  That it is ALL true.  Period.  2 Timothy 3:16-17 says “All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. ”

And if you believe the Word of God is true…you have to believe there is a hell.  The devil wants you to believe that because God is so loving that he wouldn’t want to send anyone to hell.  But going back to Him being a just God, he has to if people choose to disobey.  Otherwise, why would Jesus have had to come to earth to die for our sins.  I’ll tell you why….so we will have a way to NOT end up in hell.  So you can’t pick and choose the parts of the Bible that suit your purposes.  If you doubt even one word of the Bible you are calling God a liar.  You can’t call him a liar and still expect him to save you.

You have to be willing to repent and turn from our sin.  That’s what repentance means.  If you aren’t willing to turn from your sin, how can you say you are saved?  Again, it’s not about being perfect.  Jesus called us to repent.  The key word her is “metanoia” which means to change ones mind.  True repentance leads a person to say, “I have sinned and need to be saved.”  Then prove it with a 180 degree change of direction.  Again, it won’t happen immediately…but the desire to change will be.

                              Requires true brokenness

Is an honest regretful acknowledgement of sin with a commitment to change

Leads us to articulate godliness while removing habits that lead to sin

               Repentance IS NOT

Asking the Lord for forgiveness with the intent to sin again

You must humble yourself to admit you need help and then accept the help God offers us through instruction in the Bible.

You have to be willing to obey what God says in the Bible that we are to do AND what we are to NOT do.  That may mean giving up some things you really like.

Ask yourself these questions:

Would I be talking like this (cussing, gossiping, judging) if God were sitting here listening to me?

Would I be watching this (movie, T.V. show, YouTube video) if Jesus were sitting next to me?

Would I be listening to this music or be on this Internet website if God were in the room with me?

If the answer is ”No” to any of these…then you shouldn’t be doing it.  Here’s the thing.  Whether you choose to believe it or not…He IS right there with you.  He sees everything you do, hears every word you say and even knows every thought you have.  Yes, you heard me right.  He knows EVERY THOUGHT YOU HAVE.  In Psalms 139:2 the Bible says “You know when I sit down and when I rise up, you discern my thoughts from afar. And in verse 4 of that same chapter, it says “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold O Lord, you know it.”  There were many examples in the Bible of Jesus knowing the thoughts of those He was talking to.  Matthew 9:4, Matthew 12:25 and Matthew 22:18 are just a few examples.  The good thing…no, the GREAT thing is God gives us a way to be obedient.  To let go of anything He asks us to.  And that way is through Jesus Christ.  BUT…you have to be willing.  He wants us to CHOOSE Him.  He wants us to seek and desire holiness!  Now let me stop here and explain something.  Holiness here on earth does not mean perfection.  God knows we will never be able to be perfect here on earth.  Fortunately, He looks at our hearts.  Do we WANT to be?  Are we trying our hardest?  How does it affect us when we fail (and we will)?  He just wants us to try.  Give it our best and leave the rest to him.  When we fail, we repent and get right back up and try again.  We persevere, keep going and NEVER give up!

Right about now, some of you may be saying “That’s legalism or works of the flesh.”  No, no it’s not.  Now if you obeyed because you wanted to get something from God or if you thought you could earn your salvation through what you do…now THAT would be works of the flesh or legalism.  What I’m talking about is loving God SO much and being SO thankful for all He has done for you that you WANT to be obedient out of love an gratitude for Him.  You have to realize what He’s saved you from…Eternity in hell!  Let me be real blunt with you.  Like I said before….If you don’t believe there is a hell…you are not saved.

To be obedient you have to care about other people, regardless of their race, religion, or sexual preference.  You cannot be prejudice and think you are right with God.  The Bible puts it this way in John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.  By this all people will know that you are my disciples.  If you have love for one another.”  In 1 Corinthians 12:13 it says “For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body-whether Jew or Gentiles, slave or free-and we were all given one Spirit to drink.” And in 1 John 2:11 it says “But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness.  They do not know where they are going because the darkness has blinded them.”  Nowhere in the Bible will you find that hate or prejudice is right with God.

So in conclusion, I ask you…Do you REALLY know Jesus?  Are you REALLY saved?  Do you love as Christ loved?  Do you see hurting people and want to help them?  Are you compassionate?  As I’ve said before, if you are truly saved there will be evidence.  People will SEE a change in you.

I’ll say it again.  God LOVES you!  He doesn’t want to see anyone go to hell!  Think about what’s going on right now in the world.  Everything that fills our day has been taken from many of us.  The sports we watch on T.V. or go see in person.  Many are having to stay at home because of the stay in place orders or because their jobs have been shut down.  Think about it folks….God is removing any distractions that keep you from him in order to get your attention.  Now hear me LOUD AND CLEAR!  I do NOT think God caused this pandemic…but I do believe He can use it to call people to Him in order to save their souls.

So, it’s your choice.  Will you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?  Will you repent of your sins?  Will you choose to obey God’s commands?  I challenge you to verify what I’ve said.  I urge you to seek His truth…because He loves you.  No matter what you’ve done, no matter where you are right now, no matter how bad you may think you’ve messed up….HE LOVES YOU!  And He’s waiting on you.  Turn to Him and I promise you, you won’t regret it.

This is uncertain times we re living in but with Christ we have hope, joy and peace that passes all understanding.   Choose Christ.   I am praying for all who read this.

If you have come to the realization that you are not saved, what do you do now? It’s simple. In John 1:12 it says “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” If you are ready to sincerely accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, repent of your sins, and turn and follow him, pray this prayer with me;

Dear God. I know that my sin has separated me from you. Thank you that Jesus Christ died in my place. I ask Jesus to forgive my sin and to come into my life. Please begin to direct my life. Thank you for giving me eternal life. In Jesus name, Amen.

That’s it! Welcome to the family! Now it’s time to start learning what God wants you to do and how God wants you to act. Study the Bible and apply what it says. God is ready and willing to help you.

Thank you for this. It definitely makes you take a step back to see if you are just going through the motions or if you do really know Jesus.

Thank you! That is my prayer, that it will make people think and draw closer to God.
